About me

A native of Ottawa, Virginia pursued the study of the classical flute at conservatories in Quebec (with Gail Grimstead-Michaud) and Paris (with Raymond Guiot), piccolo (with Jean-Louis Beaumadier) and chamber music (with Claude Desurmont).  After graduation, she moved to Germany, where she enjoyed a career as a orchestral and chamber musician.  She has held teaching positions in both state and private music schools in Germany as well as being the flute and recorder instructor at the State Teacher’s College.

Since returning to Canada in 1994, Virginia has built a thriving private studio in Kanata Lakes.  Her creative, personalized and effective teaching style has enriched the lives of many students, some of whom have gone on to become professional performers and teachers.

Recent periods of study at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute with Claire Guimond , the Oberlin Baroque Perfomance Institute with Sandra Miller and Amherst Early Music have enabled me to deepen my knowledge of baroque performance practice on the historical one-keyed flute and the baroque recorder. I currently perform in a trio formation with my baroque flute, baroque cello  played  by Joan Harrison and Sonja Deunsch-Plourde on harpsichord.

I am a member of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association, The Canadian Federation of Music Teachers, Local 180 of the American Federation of Musicians and the Ottawa Flute Association
